One meaning: If you are not concerned about something, it doesn't bother you, and you don't mind it. Maybe everyone else is complaining that it is too hot today, but you like the heat, or you aren't bothered by it, and you say, "Oh, it's hot, but I don't mind / I don't mind it."
You can also say it to someone, meaning not to be concerned with or worried about something: Don't mind the snake in the sitting room; it can't hurt you.
Another meaning: You tell your child to make her bed and put away her toys, but she doesn't do it. She isn't minding you. You want you children to mind you, to do what you tell them to do, for safety, control, discipline, good manners, education, etc. When they don't mind, they are misbehaving.
Another meaning of "mind": To pay attention to, follow, or obey. You should mind your manners -- pay attention to your behavior in public and follow the correct rules for being polite, using eating utensils, etc.
Another: You ask a baby sitter to watch your children while you go out for the evening. The baby sitter is minding the children -- again, paying attention to them but also caring for them. Similarly, you have someone minding the shop that you own, meaning, staying at the store and running the business for you. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
