Please read this sentence:

This book needs to be carefully studied.

If the sentence is re-written by using "need + V-ing," is it "This book needs carefully studying" or "This book needs careful studying"?

�Need� is usually followed by an infinitive with or without the �to� marker. It�s uncommon or possible to offer an alternative construction as requested.

I don't know what is supposed to be right, but I can accept "This book needs careful studying."
