There was a renaissance in men's fashion during the early 1960s as it was influenced by Italian designers.

Could you explain the meaning and function of 'as' in this sentence?
Is 'as' a relative pronoun?

As a relative pronoun (~ a fact that), I would get rid of the �it� after �as� and add a comma �,� before it.
