In the sentence below, what does the author mean by calling the scholar "realist"?:

"'If China continues its impressive economic growth over the next few decades,' the realist scholar John Mearsheimer has written, 'the United States and China are likely to engage in an intense security competition with considerable potential for war'".

The setence was take from Foreign Affairs, article "The rise of China and the future of the West" by G. John Ikenberry.

realist - a philosopher who believes that universals are real and exist independently of anyone thinking of them

2. realist - a person who accepts the world as it literally is and deals with it accordingly

3. realist - a painter who represents the world realistically and not in an idealized or romantic style

Take your pick.
