| Three new Asian-based magazines have just hit the market, a surprise to readers who watched the Dow Jones' Far Eastern Ecomomic Review and Time Warner's Asiaweek disappear in the last several years. |
1. What does 'hit the market' mean? I couldn't look it up in my dictionary.
2. And also I'd like to know 'hit the market' is a common word among native speakers.
3. What word does 'a surprise' indicate in the quote? I think that it indicates 'three new Asian-based magazines' or 'Three new Asian-based magazines have just hit the market'. But I'm not sure.
Could you teach me?
Thanks. |

Three new Asian-based magazines are now offered for sale. This is a surprise (having 3 new Asian-based magazines) because two similar magazines disappeared. "Hit the market" is a common expression in the U.S. |
