What does a subject sentence mean?
John Edwards, the progressive Democratic candidate who made a populist, antipoverty message the centerpiece of his campaign, announced his exit from the presidential primary race on Wednesday, saying he was stepping aside so that history can blaze its path. _________________ Hiromichi |

To blaze a path or blaze a trail is to cut a new path / trail in the wilderness. History can figuratively blaze a trail if something new happens. I heard Edwards give his speech this morning, and what I understood him to mean by saying this was that the next president is going to be either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, the two remaining Democrats in the running for the nomination. If it is Clinton, it will be the first woman president; if Obama, the first African-American president. Either way, it will be something new, and history will have blazed a new path.
Implicit in what Edwards said was that the Democratic Party would win the election. Only white men are vying for the Republican Party nomination, and there is nothing trail blazing about an old white man getting into the White House. Edwards believes and hopes that his party will win the election. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
