I can laugh reading the paragraph below, but I am not sure what "stake" means here.
7. "They set up two deck chairs and a plastic owl on a stake that Nick named Lucifer." A devilish mis-stake. (Norman Stevens, Storrs, Conn.)

A stake is a thin, flat wooden stick stuck in the ground. People use stakes to support plants (grape vines, tomato plants, rose bushes), or signs (Vote for Blockhead), or anything.
