To abuse Iraq militiamen was mistake.. .President Bush vindicated in TV 2004/05/06

On 5th, in an interview on TV ,President Bush acknoledged having abused Iraq militiamen by US servicemen to be a mistake and proclaimed that he would punish the persons related to this problem. He also had an interview with satelite TV of UAE. By acknoledging the mistake to people of Iraq and other middle eastern nations, he aims at calling for understanding US's efforts to democralize Iraq, together with dodging the criticism against him, getting harsher day by day.

The president criticized the Iraq militiamen abuse by US service men to be a disgusting act. And he emphasized that the abuse by some of US servicemen was not reflecting the US's real attitude to Iraq.

Moreover,he mentioned "It is also important for Iraq people to know that democracy is not always perfect. In democratic countries, some people commit crimes, but that is investigated and related people are punished."

He pointed out that the government had been investigating about this issue since last January. " "I have nothing to be kept secret. I directed to find out the truth and announce that to Iraq people and other countries in the world.", he mentioned and promised to report the result of the investigation. As for Mr.Ramsfeld, whose responsibility the Congress is raising its voice to seek, he supported him, saying " I trust him".

--------------------------------------------------------
He acknoledges US's mistake, but didn't apologized. He is a leader of America and the highest person in charge of American troop. Low-class soldiers' crime should be punished and also taken their responsibility by the highest commander. Where is he?

How would I say about this? I agreed with the tackle of Bushy because he had no choice.

IT of course sounds really ridiculous as things progressed in such a dramastic plot. But certianly, this is supposed to be handled like the way, we laughed at and the way we criticized.

What holds me deeply concerned is why this is publicized to the other worlds. What's the trick behind it? Unhuman torture or treatments have been quite imaginable for those preys how they are cared in their capture. But why only this time, this issue had finally got the springboard to hop onto the international headline today?

Yes, back to the conduction of Bushy, I think if I were he, I would exactly follow suit.

Well, how do you think about it?

If I might be so bold as to reply, I see that there are several possible answers. Consider:

1. The International Left heavily represented in the international news media dislikes America in general and hates Bush in particular. So this is a joyous opportunity for them to embarrass him by hyping the situation that, as you say, is quite imaginable in many other countries.

2. Despite a general dislike of America, on some psychological level the world expects better behavior from 1st World democratic countries. Does anyone doubt that such torture and even worse is common in the prisons of China, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Mexico, or hundreds of other countries? It is common and expected in such places. It is not news. But when such happens under the control of America (or Canada or UK or France and so on), it is more shocking because they have fallen further from their high moral goals.

3. Most of the world still has an "us vs. them" or "me vs. you" mentality. So cross-national or cross-racial violence is always seen as more evil than same-on-same violence. You can see this even in some families. You can often see parents who will have no problem beating their own children, but then will defend their children if anyone else even yells at them.

4. There is an English expression about the news: "If it bleeds, it leads." The big news must come with graphic images. If there are no images, there is no story. The news media were given a clue by the U.S. military itself that something was happening in the U.S. controlled prisons, but nobody bothered to investigate until now. Prisoner abuse is so common everywhere in the world (even in most 1st World countries {see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/north_east/3096844.stm }), it was not considered newsworthy till there were photos to graphically illustrate the whole sadomasochistic homo-erotic angle to entertain the global audience.

Now consider this case:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/3686173.stm
European Peacekeeper soldiers in Kosovo are promoting and supporting the kidnapping and rape of children. But other than a minor report on the BBC, the world is mostly ignoring this story. Why? Because it is Europeans raping other Europeans? Because there are no graphic photos of naked girls being raped to show on TV? Because it would embarrass nice socialist countries that are sending their troops to Kosovo?
Just something to think about.
