Dear everybody,
Talking about fire accident,
what does it mean by "We were burned out of house and home"?
Does it mean the houses were all burned down?
Or people were running out of their houses in the fire?
Thanks!! |

"We were burned out of house and home" means that the fire completely destroyed the house. While this is the literal meaning, saying both "house" and "home" adds extra emotional emphasis. The point of the phrase is that the fire destroyed not only the physical building (the house) but also a place of great emotional importance to the family (the home). |
