My interpretation of " nothing more than she was not better than an opponent she could never have anticipated" is like this:
nothing more than an opponent, she could never have anticipated, whom she was not better than.
Am I correct?
If Mrs. Clinton ends up losing the race, the real reason may be nothing more than she was not better than an opponent she could never have anticipated. _________________ Hiromichi |

Close enough. Grammatically, the meaning changes slightly. In the original, the reason is the condition that she is not better than the opponent. In your revised meaning, the reason is the opponent himself. But it is not a significant difference for the purpose of the sentence. |
