I hv encountered a problem about the usage of whereas. Here are the examples below:
e.g. He must be about sixty, whereas his wife looks about thirty.
e.g. You eat a massive plate of food for lunch, whereas I have just a sandwich.
according to the explannation of cambridge dictionary,it means compared with the fact that and sometimes can replace "but". but wt are the facts being compared in the two examples above? and by the way, does "this tanker can carry 12tons of oil, whereas that one can carry 5 tons" make sense? |

In the first sentence, you are comparing the apparent ages of the husband and wife. In the second sentence, you are comparing the amount of food each person eats for lunch.
