Which one is correct?

(2)prepare for the meal
Do both phrases have the same meaning?

(2)prepare for the examination

(2)We want to take a rest. Right.
#2(1)prepare the meal. Means make the food ready to eat.
(2)prepare for the meal. Means get ready to eat, or maybe get ready to serve people food.
#3(1)prepare the examination. Means create the test for others to take.
