Dear teachers,

"Pelple are talking without speaking, hearing without listening."

I don't really understand the meaning of the sentence, especially each verb. Those seem alike. Still, the sentence stucture looks weird.
Would you please tell me about that? Thanks.

Best wish,
Peitzu Hsu

People are talking without speaking = they are saying words, but not really saying anything meaningful, not really speaking about anything important.

People are hearing without listening = they have ears, and sounds are registering, but they aren't paying attention to what they are hearing, so they aren't really listening to the message.

As for the sentence structure, it is all right, just a little elliptical. The second part leaves out the "people are" part as unnecessary. You have to fill it in from the first part.

According to Collins Cobuild Lexicon:

Quote:
Speak and talk have very similar meanings, but there are some differences in the ways in which they are used.

When you mention that someone is using his or her voice to produce words, you usually say that they are speaking.

However, if two or more people are having a conversation, you usually say that they are talking. You do not say that they `are speaking'.

Therefore, when people are talking without speaking, it may mean that they are carrying out conversations without making audible sounds (words).
