If you are referring to present perfect tense (I have been here since 1970; I have been here for 38 years)
"Since" is used for a point of time; "For" for a length of time:
I have been waiting for the bus since 8:00.
I have been waiting for the bus for 30 minutes.
I have had my car since January.
I have had my car for 3 months.
