By clinging like grim death to the gunwale, we just managed to keep inside the boat, but it was exhausting work.
From "Three men in a boat"
Could you explain what does it mean here: "by clinging like grim death.."
I don't realy understand the meaning of the work death in that context.

The gunwale (say gunnle, emphasis on the gun) is the top edge of the boat, so named because that's where you put the gun. The men are holding onto the edge of the boat for dear life, clinging tightly, as tightly as death clings once it gets hold of someone. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
