Greece is nearest to those countries in which civilization first arouse.
I saw this sentence in a book.
Should 'the' be put in front 'nearest'?

No. In this case, nearest is used as a predicate adjective, so you don't need an article.
If you rewrote it as: Greece is the nearest country to those in which civilization first arose. then you would need the. |
