Hello
Could you tell me if it is possible to use 'simple past' instead of past continuous in the following sentence:
In the Seoul Olympics in 1988, the Canadian runner Ben Johnson was running in the 100 metres final. People called it 'the race of the century' because Johnson was competing against his greatest rivel - Carl Lewis.

No, you cannot use simple past tense in this case. The competition occurred during the events mentioned in the beginning of the sentence, therefore you need the continuous form. |
