Hello there. I found the following sentence in someone's writing.
'This particular instrument consists of three parts with apparent
weight of 4 kg, 3 kg, and 1 kg, respectively, which are derived from a common 10-kg source'.
My question is what 'respectively' is used here for?

It means in the same order as stated. The three parts weigh 4 kg for the first, 3 kg for the second, and 1 kg for the third. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |

Thanks! But the order has not been stated. Wouldn't the sentence look better without respectively? Or would I be wrong if I would say that the sentence is not correct because of using respectively without mentioning the order?

| Using "respectively" means you are going with the order you mentioned. If you don't like the order, don't use "respectively." |
