Hello!
Here is how I would paraphrase these sentences:
1.She came so close to the finals she must have been bitterly disappinted to go out now.
"She almost did well enough to qualify for the finals, so she must have been bitterly disappointed to lose now."
2.It's not as good as his last movie, but it comes pretty close.
"It's not as good as his last movie, but it is still good. It is nearly as good as his last movie."
