"Hit me between the eyes" is an idiom. It means to be a complete surprise, or a total shock.

Examples:
When I found out that I had won the prize, it hit me between the eyes.
The news of 9/11 hit us between the eyes.
After I learned how many people were starving, it hit me between the eyes.

You will also hear "hit me right between the eyes." It means the same thing.
