Hi, Alex!
A gust is a sudden, strong blast of wind.
Sometimes, the weather forecaster will say, "It will be windy today, with gusts of wind up to 20 miles per hour."
A gale is a very strong wind--it is more steady than a gust. In the US, it is a wind between 30-60 miles per hour. It is used to describe how hard the wind can blow during storms, such as hurricanes.
"Gale-force winds are expected before Hurricane Katrina hits land." |
