How can you tell if a phrasal verb is separable or nonseparable? |

Hello Jake -
ex. of separable:
a) I 'put on' my hat. - I 'took off' my shoes.
b) I 'put' my hat 'on'. - I 'took' my shoes 'off'.
The meaning remains the same.
ex. of non-separable :
a) I 'get off' the bus at Elm Street. - I 'get up' at 7:00 a.m.
b) I 'get' the bus 'off' at Elm Street. - I 'get' at 7:00 a.m. 'up'.
Do you think the meaning is still clear in (b) this time?
Your question is one that stymies many learners of English...
native and non-native.
'keep on' trying! Philo |
