Hi

More often than not I deem that English is a little bit funny for its usages, or rather, taking, the following, for instance:

1. Collocations

-- afraid of ...

-- aware of ...

-- excited about ...

-- think about ...
...

2. Prepositions are usually dropped before that-clause.

-- afraid that ...

-- aware that ...

-- excited that ...

-- think that...
...

3. Now let's cut to the core of a difference of opinion to the above(point 2.).
Give you an exemplar, ' seem like '

a. seem like

-- Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time.

b. seem that-clause

-- It would seem that someone left the building unlocked.

c. seem like ...( In this case, it seems that it's the conjuction ' that ' to be dropped not the preposition ' like '.)

-- It seemed like the whole town had came to the show.

So, that's why I said " Taking, grammar, for inspiring and forming the learners' concepts of English rather than for confining the learners themselves to it would be a happier way for advancing the understanding of language learning during the process ". What's your opinion? I'm glad to recieve comments from anyone of you. Thanks a lot!

Good luck!

Hello Rice 07 -

Quote (Oct. 28, 2007) : "I'm an english (sic) beginner not familiar with some structures."

Quote (May 11, 2008) : "Taking grammar for inspiring and forming the learners' concepts of English, rather than for confining the learners to it, would be a happier way for advaning the understanding of language learning during the process."

What's my opinion?? = Quantum leap!!

...and wholeheartedly agreed!! Cool Philo

Thank you very much for saying so, but I still have a lot to learn from you. In fact, some proportions of my progress with English are through my effort at the learning process, but the rest, I don't think anyone would disagree, should be credited to the nice teachers like you in this forum.

Allow me to digress for a moment, and this's not to say I'm so smart or so big, but my learning experience to share.

Besides having drifted apart English for more than two decades, I used to not be excellent at it(English). Whereas, during my difficult time for learning, it was frustrating, even when I had been spending at least four hours a day consecutively learning English for one and a half years, that, to my shame, I wasn't able to comprehend what the BBC radio said yet while I was listening to it.

Learning how to roll with the punches, I'm now much better about listening to the program because I keep my nose to the grindstone. A watched pot never boils. So, to master English, I have to be amazingly persistent, grin and bear it, and hang in there, . That's the way to success. Hope it won't be too much for me to say that I'm a little proud of one thing that I learned English all by myself until I came here. Considering the time I spent, I'm more lucky than some other learners, particularly in terms of learning efficiency, because, so far, it hasn't been quite 3 years.

Under your tutelage, I can well believe that good things come to him who waits. Once I reach the tipping point of English learning, which, of course, needs my singleminded determination, it's in the bag( I mean English will be easier to me). That's to say-- April showers bring May flowers, which is like something with a little bit philosophical connotation Rolling Eyes . Hope that is understandable. If not, pardon me for my poor wording-- perhaps there're also a lot of mistakes in the content Embarassed Sad .

Sincerely
