Hi,

I read the following sentnece in a report. Does 'the' before 'single family housing' also apply to 'broader credit markets'?
Also would the sentence sound awkward if I put an extra 'the' before 'broader credit markets'

As the single family housing and broader credit markets remain distressed, we thought it would be worthwhile to update our outlook for the U.S. economy.

Thanks,

MG.

Yes and yes.

As written, the the applies to both kinds of markets, in a kind of ellipsis. If you add another the, you have to add another market:

As the single family housing [market] and [the] broader credit market [both] remain distressed, we thought it would be worthwhile to update our outlook for the U.S. economy.
