1. I can't understand the bold part, 'even with a Dutch diplomat for a father'.
Someone said 'even with a Dutch diplomat for a father' means 'because of a Dutch diplomat as well as a father'. But I think that it means 'despite a Dutch diplomat as a father'.
Could you tell me what it mean?
2. What words or phrases can the bold word 'taken' in the quote be replaced with?
