Hello!
What is "runway" below?
And why is "runway" singular while there are "a lot of" it ?
"This is an opportunity with a lot of runway ahead of it"
Thank you... |

A runway is a long flat area like a road used by airplanes to take-off and land. In this case it is used as a metaphor. The opportunity is like a plane that can fly high, and some condition of the opportunity gives it a high chance of success which is the long runway in front of the "plane". (More runway is better because it makes it easier for planes to take off.)
The available length of the runway can be treated as an uncountable noun. for example:
You have a long trip and a lot of road ahead of you.
This park has a lot of room for children to play.
The gallery has a lot of wall space for displaying paintings.
L.A.X. has a lot of runway to handle the big jumbo jets. _________________ "It is impossible to speak in such a way that you cannot be misunderstood." -- Karl Popper |
