Hello,

Do 'erect' and 'put up' mean the same and are they interchangeable here?

"A statue was erected in memory of the dead leader."

"A statue was put up in memory of the dead leader."

Thanks.

Technically they mean the same thing here, though "erected" sounds more formal and better matches the mood of the sentence.

Hello Bob S.:

Thank you very much. Doesn't 'put up' match the mood of the sentence well because it is informal?

Thanks.

A statue of a dead leader is a somber and formal monument.
Compare with, say, a camping tent. You could also say "erect a tent" or "put up a tent." Since camping is an informal activity, "put up" would better match this situation (not that the other is wrong, it is just a question of what a native speaker would naturally choose to match the mood).
