The ordinary family in colonial America was mainly concerned with survival and ____ that, its own economic prosperity.
A. except B. for C. beyond D. through
What does "beyond" mean here? Does it equal "in addition to"? I cannot find this meaning in a dictionary.
Viewing children as necessary members of society means that they are regarded more as people in their own right than as those of subordination.
What does "People in their own right? mean? Is it a fixed phrase?

Yes, that's a good way to put it.

Yes, it's a fixed phrase for the most part. It means they are regarded as humans with full human rights and not merely as property of their parents with no true rights. |
