Dear Teachers,

Today I watched Two and A half Men in which something I didn't get. Here is the conversation.

Alan:Somebody dumped Charlie?

The maid Berta: Broke his little black heart. It was pathetic.

Charlie: She didn't dump me.She had personal problems and moved
to Europe to, you know, find herself.

Berta: He wept.

Charlie: I did not. I felt the appropriate amount of sadness for a good rationship that had run its course.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Teachers, What does run its course mean here? Thanks

"had run its course" means 'had gone as far as it could'. Charlie felt, or at leat said, that the relationship was not going to develop any further and is over.
