In the quote, I think that 'It depends what it is' is wrong and instead 'It depends on what it is' is right. But I'm not sure.
Could you tell me which one is right?

Grammatically, you are correct. But in colloquial English, the on is often dropped. Sometimes the sentence will be shortened to simply "It depends," or just "Depends." _________________ "It is impossible to speak in such a way that you cannot be misunderstood." -- Karl Popper |
