I think that "one year" is not correct and instead "after one year" is correct.
Could you tell me if my opinion is right or wrong?

In this case it refers to an unspecified (school) year, I think.
So the writer could have said, ..."Then, in 1987 he managed to get..." if the actual year had been relevant. |
