Pagers (beepers) are history, because nowadays, most cell phones come
with that "this is the list of people who called you recently" function, right?
Yet, I still hear expressions like "did you page me?"
Is this just another way of saying "did you call me?"
What about "did you beep me?"
Do people still use this expression? In what context? |

Mostly. Some restaurants use pagers for waiting customers so the customer doesn't have to wait right next to the hostess for their name to be called.

Yes. But also some phones do have a "paging" function. When I call my brother, his voice mail options say "press 1 if you want to page this person, press 2 if you want to leave a message or wait for the beep."

You don't hear it too often any more, though I imagine you could if you are dealing with an older person who is in the habit of referring to any pocket communication device as a pager. |

Our ITT (computer) guy has a pager. You have to dial the number, wait for the beep, and then dial your number and hang up, and he will call you back. So at least in our school system, it's still being used.
Also, I can page someone on their phone, as Bob mentioned, but it's often very slow and certainly not immediate. |
