What is a subject of 'prevent defeat' below?

The evolving situation in Iraq has, in fact, tested both candidates: in Mr. McCain’s case, by raising questions about his commitment to staying the course after he initially pushed for a troop escalation prevent defeat. But for Mr. Obama, who has been accused recently of changing his positions on campaign finance and a wiretapping law, the suggestion that he was undermining a central premise of his candidacy holds particular perils.

I'm sorry, I cannot understand that sentence. It looks like something is missing. I even googled it and found the paragraph you took it from, and it was copied correctly.

My guess: It should have read after he initially pushed for a troop escalation to prevent defeat.
