I think it depends on how well you already know English or a related language.
Using myself as an example, I took French in school and can speak, read, and write it passably well, although I am not fluent. I also know a little Spanish, a closely related language, because I live in Southern California and there are many people who speak Spanish here, many signs in both English and Spanish, many Spanish radio stations, etc.
If I wanted to learn Spanish, I would take one or two semesters of Spanish at the local community college to get the basics, then hire a tutor to help me learn to really speak it. I would take what I knew of French and Spanish already and use my tutor to help me figure out everything else I needed. And I'd speak Spanish to everyone I could.
On the other hand, if I wanted to learn Arabic, which I know nothing of at the moment, I would probably take it in school and not look for a tutor until I had a really good understanding of it, probably years from now. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |

i think it is better to study in class if you can. that way you can be with and learn from a whole group of people not only one. the people in your class will know different things from you and you can help each othere, they will also give you some social life and social interaction which is really important if you are going to live in another country to study. maybe also get a 1 to 1 tutor for extra lessons one or twice a week. |

Learning 1:1 is best when you want to understand difficult grammar and vocabulary but learning in a class is best when you want to make friends and improve your conversation skills. _________________ Try some mini, on-line adventure games to help your English at: www.gameenglish.com |
