Hi, would someone help me with the following questions? Thanks

The difference is one of degree, not of ___________.
(A) kind (B) a kind (C) kinds (D) the kind
The answer is (A), but why?

The houses in my village are just like __________ in any other village in Taiwan.
(A) the ones (B) that (C) those (D) both
The answer is (A), but how about (C)? Is there anything different?

Were talking about parallelism, coherence and consistency here. Since theres no article before degree, the ans. Should be (A) to be consistent in sentence construction. (C) wont make sense. The difference is in degree and not kind (*kinds). The answer to the 2nd question is indeed (A). The ones means The houses. Those is fine but again the answer wouldnt be in a coherent form.

Similarity of type. When comparing nouns or using a conjunction, it is grammatically good practice to make the nouns similar in form (plural or singular, direct, indirect, or general, etc.). So degree is general singular form, no articles, and you pick the answer that matches that form which is (A).

Those is okay, but the ones is better. Those is typically used for the other that is in a different situation or location. Since both my village and any other village are in Taiwan, they are not really so different. If any other village were in a different country, say PRC or S. Korea, then those would be a better choice.

Thanks for your help. Questions again.

The difference is one of degree, not of ___________.
(A) kind (B) a kind (C) kinds (D) the kind

If I change the above question into "The difference is one of the degree, not of ___________" or "The difference is one of a degree, not of ___________," then the answer will be (D) or (B) respectively. Am I right?

The houses in my village are just like __________ in any other village in Taiwan.
(A) the ones (B) that (C) those (D) both

If I rewrite the above sentence into "The ears of rabbits are longer than __________ of dogs, the answer will be (C). Is it correct? Or is the answer still (A)?

Technically, yes.

Quote:
The houses in my village are just like __________ in any other village in Taiwan.
(A) the ones (B) that (C) those (D) both

If I rewrite the above sentence into "The ears of rabbits are longer than __________ of dogs, the answer will be (C). Is it correct? Or is the answer still (A)?
Then I would use (C).
