In the United States there was an unusual tale telling of the daughter of a mechanic. One day while walking along the bank of a lake, the girl happened to see 20 eggs laid by a wild goose. After some time the girl ____ the mother would not return to her eggs and she decided to take them home. ..
A. realized B. expected C. imagined D. admitted

Could I choose answer B? "Expect" means to think that something will happen in the dictionary.

Am i right?

No, it doesn't quite fit.
Expect is to think of some result for a situation even before the situation happens. Any time you see a mother bird leave her nest, you naturally expect her to return at some point.
Realize means you think something new or different because of new information. You expect a mother bird will return to her nest, but when you see a cat eating the bird, you realize that her young will now starve to death.
