Hi,

This sentence was on the New York Times. But I don't understand the first sentence, We are so cooked. Would you please help?

I'd say it means something along the lines of, "We are in big trouble."

This may not be true, but I have heard that the expression "your goose is cooked" comes from the early Christian days when the Romans would go around looking for Christians at Christian holiday times like Christmas and Easter. If the household had prepared a feast, cooking a goose to celebrate, that was evidence that the people were Christians, and the cooked goose meant that the people were caught.

So if your goose is cooked, you have been busted, and you are in trouble.
