Both are correct.
on the same day is an adverbial prepositional phrase;
the same day is an adverbial temporal noun phrase.
Sometimes the preposition is optional:
He will arrive Friday afternoon.
He will arrive on Friday in the afternoon.
Sometimes you must use a preposition:
He will arrive at 3pm. _________________ "It is impossible to speak in such a way that you cannot be misunderstood." -- Karl Popper |
