" In fact, more than 220 states the size of Rhode Island could fit into the state of Texas."

In my opinion, above sentence has to be changed into " more than 220 states of the size of Rhode Island" to be grammatically right. What's your opinion?

The sentence is fine as is because of something called ellipsis, a grammar process in colloquial English where words are often omitted but still understood from the context.
From the context, you could write the above sentence as:
states of the size of Rhode Island (but the of-of so close together sounds a bit odd)
states that are the size of Rhode Island
states about the size of Rhode Island
states with the size of Rhode Island
states that have the size of Rhode Island

And I'm sure there are more possibilities. Pick any you like! Very Happy
