I was taught that you use kinds / sorts / types when it is plural, but kind / sort / type when it is singular.
What kind of car do you drive?
What sort of food do they have there?
What type of person is he?
What kinds of flowers do you like?
What sorts of vegetables can we grow here?
What types of viruses are the hardest to treat?
