Hello,
1."One of my earliest memories of Dad is that he would often leave the house at dawn to go jogging."
Can I use 'used to' instead of 'would' here as in
"One of my earliest memories of Dad is that he used to often leave the house at dawn to go jogging."
2."We used to swim every day when we were childern- we would run down to the lake and jump in."
Are 'would' and 'used to' interchangeable here as in
"We would swim every day when we were childern- we used to run down to the lake and jump in."
3.Can 'would' be used at the beginning of a story like the example above(We would swim...)?
4.Can I use 'would' in negative sentences. For example
"I remember that she didn't use to go jogging every day."
"I remember that she would not go jogging every day."
Thank you very much. |

There is a slight difference between "used to" and "would". "Used to" is often preferred when you are talking about an action that was more of a habit, done without much thought. "Would" is often used for something that you chose to do. But in the above examples, the difference is so slight, you can effectively use them interchangeably.

In this case of negative usage, the difference in "used to" and "would" becomes important. In this case, "didn't used to go jogging" implies it was simply not her habit to go jogging. But "would not go jogging" implies that she refused to go jogging when given a choice. _________________ "It is impossible to speak in such a way that you cannot be misunderstood." -- Karl Popper |

Hello Bob S.
Thank you very much for replying to my questions. I'm afraid I have some more questions to ask about the two words.
There is a slight difference between "used to" and "would". "Used to" is often preferred when you are talking about an action that was more of a habit, done without much thought. "Would" is often used for something that you chose to do.
1.Could you explain what you meant by 'done without much thought' and by 'would'...you chose to do'?
2..What is the difference between 'would often' and 'would' in my examples? Do they mean the same?
3..Is 'used to often...' correct?
4.My dictionary says 'would' can't be used at the beginning of a story when it means a repeated action in the past. Is that so?
5.Can 'would' be used in asking questions like 'used to'?
For example,
"Would he go jogging every day?
Yes, he would/ used to go jogging every day."
Thank you very much. |

Sure. Please remember that these are not absolute rules. They are just general guidelines.
Think of a simple activity such as walking the dog. Now make it past tense: When I was young, I walked the dog.
Is walking the dog a simple activity? Was it no bother for me? Was it something that needed to be done and I had no problem doing it? Then I can say:
When I was young, I used to walk the dog.
Was walking the dog an effort? Was walking something I didn't enjoy on my own, but I needed to do for the sake of the dog only? Then I can say:
When I was young, I would walk the dog.
If your feelings about the action are uncertain, then you can mostly use used to and would interchangeably.

Would implies it was done regularly. Would often implies it was frequent but not regular.

Yes, it's fine.

Not necessarily. You can start a story with would somewhere in the sentence. It can be used to set the scene. For example:
Summers on the farm were long and hot. I would often join my dad in the cab of his tractor early in the morning to finish his plowing before the heat of the day made it unbearable.

"Would he go jogging every day?
Yes, he would/ used to go jogging every day." |
Yes, though the same general guidelines apply.
Yes, he would get up at sunrise so he could go jogging and shower before his mother made breakfast for the family. He used to have a high protein breakfast of eggs every morning because his family kept chickens in the backyard _________________ "It is impossible to speak in such a way that you cannot be misunderstood." -- Karl Popper |
