1.He was so kind as to help me.
2.He was drunk as to be in the hospital.
3.How could you drink so much as to be in the hospital? |
I made sentences above to practice 'so~ as to do sth'.
Could you pinpoint my mistakes in the sentences if any?
Thanks. |

so~ as to ### is a cause and effect grammar form. ____ so ___ is the cause, as to ____ is the effect. For example:
The Stratosphere Tower is so tall as to be a hazard to aviation.
Your sentence #1 doesn't have that form, so it doesn't quite work. It sounds a bit odd to my ear.
#2 is close. I would write it:
He was so drunk as to need to go to the hospital.
#3 is okay. _________________ "It is impossible to speak in such a way that you cannot be misunderstood." -- Karl Popper |

Thanks, Bob.
I have some more questions.
1. I think that #1 is written as the form 'so~as to do something'. I can't not understand why you think it is not written as the form. I would be appreciate if you would explain it again.
2.'How could you drink so much that you were in the hospital?' is the same meaning as #3?
Thanks again. |

It's just that, to my sense, the cause and effect don't make sense. IMO, his kindness does not make him be helpful, but rather his helpfulness makes him a kind person. If there is no helpfulness, then there is no kindness. I would write #1 as:
It was so kind of him to help me.

Yes, it seems to mean the same to my ear. _________________ "It is impossible to speak in such a way that you cannot be misunderstood." -- Karl Popper |
