1.She said she received many crank calls.
2.She said she answered many crank calls.

Last time, I asked which one is correct 'receive a cell phone' or 'answer a cell phone' on Help Center and got the answer in which 'answer a cell phone' is correct.
But, now I saw #1 in a book. so, I think #2 is correct rather than #1.

Could you tell me what I think is right or wrong?
If wrong, please explain why.

Thanks.

Number 1 is correct. Number 2 sounds like someone made a crank call and left a message on her answering machine, and when she got home she called them back.

You can answer a cell phone, or you can receive a call.
I answered my cell phone and found out it was my mother.
I received a call from my mother yesterday.
She left a note on my answering machine and I called her back and answered the call in the evening.
