First, make sure that you buy a house which is earthquake safe. You also have to make sure that there are bolts underneath your house.

What does "bolts" mean here? Why should it placed underneath the house? What can it be used for?

Steel bolts are used to connect your house structural frame to its concrete foundation, preferably through steel joists attached to your house's wooden posts.

Just a little something I found at a home construction supply web site. It was one of the clearer illustrations. Many were photos where you couldn't tell what was what if you didn't already know what you were looking for.

Yes, drawings often are superior to photos when it comes to construction or machinery. A nice line drawing of a carburetor is about 1,000 times better than a photograph of one.
