2. If so, what does 'the show' mean? Probably it means a play, musical, or movie. Could also mean a particular act or concert, or even a radio or television program. You would have to get the meaning from the rest of the piece.
3. Can you paraphrase it for me? Sure:
It means that he thought the show had about an equal chance of succeeding as it did of failing; he thought the odds of success were about 50%.
A 50-50 chance or 50-50 odds refers to 50% chance of success, hence 50% chance of failure. You can also speak of a 50-50 split, meaning an equal division of work or input or outcome or profit.
