Quote:
He gave the show a fifty-fifty chance of survival.

1.Does it make sense?
2.If so, what does 'the show' mean?
3.Can you paraphrase it for me?

Thanks.

1. Does it make sense? Yes.

2. If so, what does 'the show' mean? Probably it means a play, musical, or movie. Could also mean a particular act or concert, or even a radio or television program. You would have to get the meaning from the rest of the piece.

3. Can you paraphrase it for me? Sure:

It means that he thought the show had about an equal chance of succeeding as it did of failing; he thought the odds of success were about 50%.

A 50-50 chance or 50-50 odds refers to 50% chance of success, hence 50% chance of failure. You can also speak of a 50-50 split, meaning an equal division of work or input or outcome or profit.

It doesn't have to be 50-50. It could be 60-40, i.e., 60% chance of success, or any other division that adds up to 100.
