1. Our circumstances are so desperate that it is uncertain whether we will ever return alive.
2. Left behind, we watched as Shackleton and the boat sailed away from Elephant Island. The chances of them EVER returning to find us, the fear that we might never know their fate and possible delays, at first made us feel low and discouraged.
What does "ever" mean in the two sentences above? Could you give one more example?

Ever used like this means, "at any time". (Usually used with a negative or in questions)
For example: I am trying to learn Chinese, but I don't think I'll ever master it.
Or, I would love a new Mercedes-Benz, but I don't think I will ever be able to afford one.
Or, will a black man ever be President of the USA? |
