Hi,
"During" is grammatically a preposition used to start a phrase (i.e. I went to the bathroom during the meeting). "While" is a subordinate conjuction that links two phrases (i.e. I went to the bathroom (phrase 1)whilethe meeting was going on. (phrase 2).
