A theft, involving approximately $10,000 worth of jewelry, was reported at 8:34 a.m. I was assigned the case at 9:30. The victim is eager to take action and wants the thief sent to prison. Further, the theft victim suggested that I check out three people who may have been at the scene at the time of the crime; a cook, an electrician and a personal assistant. All were easily contacted and appeared to have known about the jewels but felt no temptation to steal them. I am looking for the possibility that the jewels are hidden.
Q. About the above passage.
1. 'I' am looking for a lead. -----the use of 'lead' is right?
2. The people pointed out by the vicitim seemed to have had no temptation to steal the jewels. ----- ths use of 'pointed out' is right? |

Yes the use of lead is correct. (It is pronounced leed) It means a clue to be followed to the resolution of a case, or problem.
Pointed out, is also correct. Literally, it means that the victim pointed his finger at three people and said, "It may have been Bill, Joe, or Hortense." Used figuratively it means to make someone aware of a fact, or circumstance. Thus, the victim probably said to the detective " I think it was either A, B, or C, because they were the only ones around at the time it was stolen." |
