I saw the quote in my dictionary. I think that 'is' in the quote is wrong and instead 'are' is correct.

Could you tell me I'm right or wrong.

The quote is correct. This example is tricky because "media studies" is a plural phrase, but in this example it is being referred to as a singular unit, or a singular course of study. It is similar to referring to a musical band as a singular unit, even though bands are made up of multiple people.
