Hello, teachers.
I have a question about the following sentence.
A persistent office rumor held that he (Andrew J. Burris) had become head of the FBI purely because he happened to have an initial _J_ in his name, but in his case the _J_ stood for Jeremiah.
(Brain Twister by Randall Garrett)
What does an initial "J" have to do with becomeing the head of the FBI? Obviously this is a joke among the FBI people, but I don't understand the point of this joke.
I hope you are all having a very merry Christmas. |

| Perhaps because J. Edgar Hoover was the first director of the FBI, so the fact that Mr. Burris has the initial "J" in his name, just like Hoover, is the reason for the joke. |
